HND Breastfeeding Commitee

HND Breastfeeding Committee

Breastfeeding is universally endorsed by the world’s health and scientific organizations as the best way of feeding infants and young children. Research in the United States and throughout the world indicates that breastfeeding provides benefits to infants, women, families, and society and that formula is nutritionally inferior to breastmilk.

Mission, Vision, and Goal of the Committee

Mission:  Building a Healthy North Dakota through leadership and working collaboratively with communities to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.

Vision:  We envision breastfeeding as the norm for feeding infants and young children  throughout North Dakota.

Goal:
The HND Breastfeeding Committee’s goal is a 75 percent initiation rate, a 50 percent continuation rate to 6 months, and a 25 percent rate at 1 year by the year 2010.

Steps in the Right Direction

The Committee would like to highlight North Dakota businesses and/or organizations that support and promote breastfeeding. Policy links are found under the Committee Resources section.

North Dakota Department of Health’s Infants at Work and Childcare Policies

Since 1996, the North Dakota Department of Health has implemented personnel policies supporting breastfeeding mothers returning to work. The Infants at Work policy allows parents to bring their infants to work with them until the infant is 6 months old.  The Infants at Childcare policy allows breastfeeding mothers a flexible work schedule to pump breastmilk or breastfeed her infant until her child turns 1 year of age.

Altru Hospital’s No Formula Gift Bag Policy

Altru Hospital in Grand Forks stopped giving out formula gift bags containing infant formula to new moms about 5-7 years ago. Altru also stopped providing educational materials published by formula companies.
