North Dakota Oral Health Coalition

Comprehensive collaboration, the core of Healthy North Dakota, is helping North Dakotans come together to uncover innovative solutions to 21st-century public health challenges such as heart disease, obesity, cancer and diabetes. Healthy North Dakota celebrates the accomplishments of the efforts of its members:

Establishment of a supportive framework and communication system
HND Committee members now have the ability to connect ever more closely and rapidly through access to a suite of web-based tools that will allow online, real-time participation, data sharing, scheduling and interactivity.

Connectivity leverages resources
The connectivity fostered by HND has enabled work groups and committees to leverage additional funds for projects, access expertise, and develop a consensus recommendation on the practice of weighing and measuring children in schools.

Collaboration leads to legislative successes
Working through collaboration, Healthy North Dakota partners engaged in the state 2005 legislative session. While there were many factors contributing to the passage of these bills, many acknowledge that the Healthy North Dakota collaborative played a key role. Two legislative successes were achieved:

1) passage of a smoke-free law that provides protection from secondhand smoke to an estimated 40,000 workers and numerous business patrons in places of business including restaurants, and

2) unanimous passage of a bill that gives students the right to carry and self-administer asthma medications while at school.
